There are several reasons why small dogs are more likely to be considered hypoallergenic as far as people go – but that does not mean that they do not have skin problems.

Since small dog breeds cannot easily climb on the couch, bed, or other furniture there will be fewer allergens on the furniture, so you will not be as affected by them.

Small dogs want to have their own space. They will sleep in a dog bed or blanket that you should wash often.

Keeping small dogs in a crate during the day while you are gone will make them feel safer and also prevent them from destroying your home. This will also reduce allergens from getting into the carpets and on the walls.

Small dogs usually have shorter hair or they have hair that is long and thin. This hair does not seem to cause as many problems to those with dog allergies. Their hair is easy to take care of and does not shed as often as other breeds. While you will have to take these dogs to be groomed more often, you should be able to breathe easily around them.

Since the dogs do not shed as often, less dander is present in carpeting and on walls as well.

Most small dog breeds do not produce a lot of saliva. Saliva can also cause people to have allergy attacks. This is because of bacteria that are found in the saliva.

Careful – that stuffing and gravy could trigger your dog’s allergy problems.

Well, here we are getting into another holiday season and if you’re like me you will be tempted to give your dog some of that yummy food you are enjoying yourself.

Don’t do it!

I know it’s nearly impossible to say NO to your dog and I am far from being perfect at this myself, but it’s a known fact that a lot of the food we eat as humans is not good for your pets. Saying that could be a gross understatement as many of the foods simply do not agree with our dogs health and wellness. Feeding them some of the table scraps could be immediate or even long term mistakes.

Stuffings for example. What is really in that stuffing???

Those old bread crumbs combined with flour and starch and onions and who knows what else may be tasty with all that gravy dumped on it, but dogs are not meant to eat bread, flour, grains and corn and mushroons and all that stuff that often gets mixed in to the food served at holiday time. Sure, grandma may be famous for her stuffing, but there is just too great of a chance that your pet will react strongly to the ingredients and may even have an allergic health crisis due to eating that holiday food for humans.

At the very least some of the foods are very likely to be contaiminated with mold and fungus and cause mycotoxins to gain a foothold in your dog’s digestive system causing all kinds of dog allergy symptoms like allergic reactions and skin problems.

The only thing you can do is be sensible and only give them the purest of foods with the least amount of spices and seasonings.

Maybe a tiny piece of meat or a little helping of skin – but don’t give them garbage! They are NOT canine garbage disposals! Our pets can’t deal with garbage food the way we do and i t can affect their skin and cause all kinds of problems including excessive itching and other allergic behavior.

Think ahead this holiday and have treats for them that are GOOD for them and give them those so they will feel like they are a part of the festivities instead of giving them scraps! The result will be better health and more happiness this holiday season and many more in the future!
