Dog Food Allergies and Nutritional Treatments

Posted by Filed Under Canine Nutrition, Dog Food, Dog Food Allergies, Organic Dog Food with No Comments

The type of dog food you select for your dog’s diet can make a big difference if you pet has a dog food allergy.

The kind of food you feed your dog can even make a difference with your pet’s teeth.

Choosing an organic dry dog food can help to prevent allergy problems from surfacing. Good organic dry dog food can allso help sharpen and polish your dog’s teeth.  Avoiding processed canned food when possible will help to reduce tartar and plaque and keep your dog away from the harmful preservatives and additives often put in canned food for pets.

Symptoms of a dog food allergy may include excessive scratching, hair loss, skin infections as well as ear infections.

Most times a vet will instantly prescribe antibiotics for skin infections which might fix them up briefly, but the skin problems often will reoccur when the antibiotics are stopped. In addition the antibiotics will weaken a dogs natural friendly bacteria and immune system so antiobiotics amy even make the prblem worse in the long run.

An animal with itchy skin that does not seem to improve with the use of antihistamines or steroids, may be suffering from dog food allergies.

As you may understand, a dog’s diet influences everything from outputs to teeth.  Even your dog’s energy level and attitude is affected by the dog’s diet.  Selecting your dog’s diet wisely and consulting your veterinarian is a fabulous way to improve the quality of your pet’s life.

Your dog’s diet will also affect your pet’s energy level. It’s an indicator of overall health. If the dog’s diet is lacking, your pet may be sluggish or unable to rest contently.  If your pet requires extra nutrition to run or walk considerable distances, a healthy diet is crucial.

There is also a difference between dog food allergies and food intolerance. An intolerance to certain foods may cause symptoms such as diarrhea or frequent bowel movements and vomiting. Fortunately, whether the animal is suffering from food allergy or food intolerance, once the proper diagnosis has been made, they can both be treated.

Dog Skin Problems and Small Dog Breeds

Posted by Filed Under Dog Allergy Treatments, Dog Skin Problems, Dogs with No Comments

There are several reasons why small dogs are more likely to be considered hypoallergenic as far as people go – but that does not mean that they do not have skin problems.

Since small dog breeds cannot easily climb on the couch, bed, or other furniture there will be fewer allergens on the furniture, so you will not be as affected by them.

Small dogs want to have their own space. They will sleep in a dog bed or blanket that you should wash often.

Not all small dogs are good candidates for least likely to have skin allergy problems. As you can see in the webmd slideshow dogs with skin problems the Chihuahua is a breed that sometimes itches often and excessively.

Keeping small dogs in a crate during the day while you are gone will make them feel safer and also prevent them from destroying your home. This will also reduce allergens from getting into the carpets and on the walls.

Small dogs usually have shorter hair or they have hair that is long and thin. This hair does not seem to cause as many problems to those with dog allergies. Their hair is easy to take care of and does not shed as often as other breeds. While you will have to take these dogs to be groomed more often, you should be able to breathe easily around them.

Since the dogs do not shed as often, less dander is present in carpeting and on walls as well.

Do small dogs have skin problems? Yes of course! Do you know the symptoms of a small dog allergy problem?

Small dog allergy symptoms often include a rumbling noisy stomach. Your pets digetsive sounds just may mean they have a problem.

Most small dog breeds do not produce a lot of saliva. Saliva can also cause people to have allergy attacks. This is because of bacteria that are found in the saliva.

Holiday Treats and Dog Allergies

Posted by Filed Under Canine Nutrition, Dog Safety Tips, Dogs, Organic Dog Food with No Comments

Careful – that stuffing and gravy could trigger your dog’s allergy problems.

Well, here we are getting into another holiday season and if you’re like me you will be tempted to give your dog some of that yummy food you are enjoying yourself.

Don’t do it!

I know it’s nearly impossible to say NO to your dog and I am far from being perfect at this myself, but it’s a known fact that a lot of the food we eat as humans is not good for your pets. Saying that could be a gross understatement as many of the foods simply do not agree with our dogs health and wellness. Feeding them some of the table scraps could be immediate or even long term mistakes.

Stuffings for example. What is really in that stuffing???

Those old bread crumbs combined with flour and starch and onions and who knows what else may be tasty with all that gravy dumped on it, but dogs are not meant to eat bread, flour, grains and corn and mushroons and all that stuff that often gets mixed in to the food served at holiday time. Sure, grandma may be famous for her stuffing, but there is just too great of a chance that your pet will react strongly to the ingredients and may even have an allergic health crisis due to eating that holiday food for humans.

At the very least some of the foods are very likely to be contaiminated with mold and fungus and cause mycotoxins to gain a foothold in your dog’s digestive system causing all kinds of dog allergy symptoms like allergic reactions and skin problems.

The only thing you can do is be sensible and only give them the purest of foods with the least amount of spices and seasonings.

Maybe a tiny piece of meat or a little helping of skin – but don’t give them garbage! They are NOT canine garbage disposals! Our pets can’t deal with garbage food the way we do and i t can affect their skin and cause all kinds of problems including excessive itching and other allergic behavior.

Think ahead this holiday and have treats for them that are GOOD for them and give them those so they will feel like they are a part of the festivities instead of giving them scraps! The result will be better health and more happiness this holiday season and many more in the future!

Anyone that has had a dog with a skin condition or requiring medical treatments can tell you that vet visits are never cheap!

I remember how painful it was when I first got my puppy dog. I wasn’t short of money – but I had no idea having a dog would be so expensive.

It starts off innocently enough with getting them spayed or neutered. Then you start to deal with fleas and other things. It seems to be an endless spending spree.

Well – this article on dog treatment bills might just help you by asking your consideration when deciding what kind of dog you will get.

It helps to be aware of medical conditions that are common for a breed and be prepared for possible treatments.

Does your dog have dandruff?

I just wrote an article about a suggested Dog Dandruff Treatment.

Dog dandruff causes may not be fully understood, but we do have treatements for really bad situations. If the dog skin is itching and dog dandriff shampoo has not fully overcome the problem you may need to visit your vet.

Usually the dandruff treatments include a type of anti-fungal shampoo. After all that is usually part of the problem. Did you know that humans too solve dandruff with anti fungal shampoos like Head and SHoulders? That’s an anti-fungal!

Well, if your dog has skin problems including bad dandruff there are options to give them a treatment that will work!

Dogs Having Heatstroke – Keep Your Pets Safe in Summer

Dog Safety Tips for Summer Heat

The last thing you want is for your dog to get heatstroke!

It should be a concern at the top of your list as it heats up and gets into Summer to keep your pet cool and safe and away from extreme heat.

Regardless of where you live, there is a good chance it gets hot enough that your pet could end up with heatstroke or even die from something a simple as leaving them without proper ventilation and fresh water. Environmental conditions can contribute negatively to your dogs health.

You’d think we all know about not leaving our dogs in the car while we go shopping or run errands, but I regularly see news stories about dogs freaking out and police busting the windows to sae the pets. The owners often get cited and are given a ticket or even worse.

The thing is these are only the cases that get noticed. How often do you see a dog ina  car that is panting and is enduring high temps? I see it all the time. A car heats up so fast in such a short time to extreme temperatures that you could really be causing harm to your pet and not even realize it.

Just try to sit in the car yourself for 15 or 20 minutes with the window barely cracked like most people do. It’s not so comfortable, is it?

Don’t put your dogs through this ordeal. Keep your pets cool! Don’t leave them unattended in cars unless you they are in you view atr all times.

Be sure to provide shelter from the sun and fresh water if you leave your dogs outside during the Summer.

There is a lot of information out there on heatstroke for dogs. I sugegst you do a little research!

Excessive Itching – Dogs and Beaches

Posted by Filed Under Environmental Conditions with No Comments

Should You Take Your Dog To The Beach?

I just wrote an article about dogs itching excessively. It was triggered by an aticle I just saw about extending hours that dogs are allowed on the beach in Laguna Beach, California.

Article Source: Laguna Beach extends hours for dogs on beaches

I know how hard it may be to identify the triggers that cause allergic reactions – but the more I think about it – the more I am considering that the junk we get exposed to in the ocean, harbors, lakes and everywhere can have a detrimental impact.

Be careful out there!
